Find Electrical Faults Before They Cause a Failure

Thermographic Electrical Inspections

Most electrical faults are invisible until they fail. Thermal imaging reveals overloaded circuits, loose connections, and failing components while your system is still running — before they cause a fire, a failed insurance claim, or a costly shutdown. Lloyd Electrical provides thermographic inspections and test and tagging for commercial properties, rental buildings, and worksites across Auckland.

Thermographic Electrical Inspections

Thermal imaging finds problems that visual inspections miss. Using a FLIR infrared camera, we scan your switchboard, distribution boards, and electrical connections for heat signatures that indicate loose connections, overloaded circuits, failing components, or early-stage faults — before they cause a fire, a shutdown, or a failed insurance claim.

Who needs a thermographic inspection:

Landlords and property managers
Identify switchboard risks in rental properties before a tenant makes a complaint or a fault escalates. Increasingly required by insurers as part of commercial property coverage.
Commercial and industrial premises
Factories, warehouses, and office buildings where an electrical fault means downtime, not just inconvenience.
Body corporates and strata managers
Common area switchboards and distribution boards across multiple tenancies.
Pre-purchase due diligence
Buyers of commercial property who want an independent electrical condition report before settlement.

Electrical Safety Inspections & Testing

What To Expect From Our Thermographic Electrical Inspections

What you'll receive

A professional report with thermal images, fault severity ratings, and clear remediation steps, ready to hand straight to your insurer, body corporate, or property manager.

Test and tagging

A WorkSafe inspection or a faulty tool injury are two things no business wants to face unprepared. Test and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is your evidence that you've met your duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and it's what WorkSafe inspectors check for on construction sites.

Recommended re-test intervals

These are the standard intervals recommended under AS/NZS 3760 and recognised by WorkSafe New Zealand. Actual intervals may vary depending on the type of equipment, how frequently it's used, and the conditions it's exposed to. Higher-risk environments, or equipment that's been dropped, damaged, or repaired, should be retested immediately regardless of when it was last tagged. We'll advise the right schedule for your specific site when we carry out the initial test.
Construction sites - 3 months
Equipment takes heavy physical abuse- drops, dust, moisture, and constant movement. Short intervals reflect the high probability of damage between uses.
Industrial / workshop - 6 months
Frequent use in demanding conditions with moderate wear. Regular testing catches deterioration before it becomes a hazard.
Office / commercial - 12 months
Lower risk environment with light daily use, but annual testing satisfies WorkSafe expectations and most insurer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question?

Yes, and no, depending on how you read the law. The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires employers to ensure the workplace, including electrical equipment, is safe.

AS/NZS 3760 is the standard recognised by WorkSafe New Zealand for meeting that obligation, and a current test and tag record is your evidence that you have. While the Act doesn't prescribe specific intervals, WorkSafe inspectors routinely check for tagged equipment on construction sites, and insurers are increasingly requiring compliance records for commercial tenancies.

If someone is injured by faulty equipment and you have no record of testing, you're exposed.
There's no regulation that specifically requires landlords to commission a thermographic inspection but the Residential Tenancies Act requires properties to be maintained in a reasonable state of repair, and an unassessed switchboard sits in a grey area most landlords would rather not test.

More practically, a growing number of commercial property insurers now require evidence of electrical condition as part of underwriting, particularly for older buildings. A thermographic report satisfies that requirement and gives you a defensible record if a fault or claim ever arises.
Most commercial sites take between one and three hours depending on the number of boards and distribution panels. In the majority of cases no shutdown is required, the thermal camera reads heat signatures through the panel cover while the system is live, which is actually necessary for an accurate result since a powered-down board shows nothing useful. We'll confirm the scope and any access requirements before the visit, and you'll have a written report with thermal images and fault classifications within 24 hours.
